Amidst all the music, story-telling, dancing, snake-charming, acrobatics, and general party atmosphere that defines Marrakech’s main square, Djmaa el Fna, it is easy to forget the plaza’s main draw: the food. Dozens of restaurants and individuals from all over the city set up booths at night, displaying their fresh meats and vegetables and calling out like barkers to anyone they think looks hungry. The gregarious waiter pictured here works at booth #114, and calls himself Mohamed Shakespeare. While many of the booths (and their sponsoring eateries) have come and gone with the times, Mohamed’s booth has been operating at Djmaa el Fna for over twenty years.
Mohamed Shakespeare was first published October 11, 2011.
