What many in the States would call an alley is a full-blown street in the medinas of Morocco’s cities. This street in Fes, for example, barely wide enough for two people to walk through side-by-side of each other, is the address of an herborist, or natural healer. No matter what ails you, there’s a cure for it. Flaky skin? Rheumatism? That time of the month? Don’t worry; the cure will soon be mixed up and sent home with you in a small paper bag. Much of Morocco’s folk medicine is intertwined with religion or mysticism, particularly in the rural areas. There is currently a fervent, widespread movement in Morocco to shun modern pharmaceuticals and embrace natural healing and remedies. Herborists like this one are in good business.
