A beautifully common sight in Morocco, this arched gateway spans a street in the kasbah complex in the southern city of Erfoud. Built by the French in the 1930’s as an administrative center for the southwest region, most of Erfoud’s population lives in the modern town, but a handful of families still live in the old kasbah. This is not an uncommon occurrence in Morocco; the most well-known kasbah-dwelling community lives in Kasbah of the Oudayas in Rabat. The families that dwell in the kasbah in Erfoud manage large groves of date trees, a crop that has put Erfoud on the map. The town has also become well known in recent years for its marble production.
