Journey along the highest road in Morocco, the Tizi-n-Tichka pass, to Ouarzazate, the largest crossroads along the ancient caravan route and former home of the warlord Pasha Glaoui. The next morning, head to the last town before the desert sands cover the road, Zagora, to prepare for a day of camel trekking and an overnight stay in the Sahara. From there, travel to the dunes of Merzouga, off-roading in 4×4 vehicles before turning in for the night. In the morning, stop briefly in the town of Erfoud before traveling to the quaint Berber village of Tamtatouchte, which you’ll be hard pressed to find on any map. From there, pass through the 1,000-foot sheer rock face of the Todra Gorge, and rest for the night in the sun-baked Dades Valley. In the morning, make your way through the Mgouna Valley, where Berber tribes still practice the nomadic ways of their ancestors, before stopping briefly once more for rest and refreshment in Ouarzazate on your way back to Marrakech.
