Depart from Fes on your way to the south, stopping briefly for rest and refreshment in the Berber town of Azrou, the tranquil Ifrane, and the old mining town of Midelt before reaching our destination of Merzouga. In the morning, head out to explore the Saharan dunes by both 4×4 vehicle and by camel, with the option of spending the night in a Bedouin tent beneath the desert sky. The following day, head to the quintessential Moroccan village of Tantatouchte before passing through the base of the opposing 1,000-foot cliffs that comprise the Todra Gorge and stopping for the night in the sun-baked Dades Valley. The next day, travel to Ouarzazate, which was a major crossroads town of the ancient trade routes, and still maintains its importance, today. Here, visit crumbling kasbahs and Ait ben Haddou, the fortified ksar that has stood proudly over the arid south for nearly a thousand years. Stop briefly in Telouet for an evening meal, and arrive late that night in Marrakech.
