Depart from Fes and head to the town of Ifrane, which carries a distinctly European atmosphere. From there, head to the cedar forests of Azrou, hoping to catch a glimpse of the town’s most famous residents, the macaque monkeys known as Barbary Apes. Travel on to Midelt, an old mining town that feels more than a little like the old American west. Head on to the Legionnaire’s Tunnel, which, true to its name, was built by the French Foreign Legion. Stop for the night in Erfoud, at the doorstop of the desert. The next day, head out to the dunes of Merzouga, the only true Saharan dunes in Morocco, and spend the day exploring by 4×4 and by camel. That night can be spent in a Bedouin tent underneath the desert sky. The next day is another full day of desert trek, where once again, you will have the choice of spending the night in a Bedouin tent, or in a lavish riad. The next day, gradually make your way back to civilization as you pass along the base of the 1,000-foot tall opposing cliffs that make up the Todra Gorge, before stopping at the charming Berber town of Tamtaouchte. The next morning, pause at the crossroads town of Errachidia for rest and refreshment before heading back through the mountains to Fes.
